Libguide Libguide: Link-checking of guides

Link-checking

To ensure our guides remain current, functional, and consistent in appearance we undertake regular link-checking of our published LRGs, RSGs and General Purpose guides.

Link-checking is organised by the Libguides team in consultation with Faculty and Frontline teams. Link-checking is completed by Library officers. We organise link-checking using our Libguide Link Checking spreadsheet available on the S drive: S:\Academic\Library Services\LEARNING & TEACHING\LibGuides\Link checking (and see link below).

LRGs

If time and workloads permit, we aim to check all published LRGs prior to Session 1 and Session 2.

The LibGuides team exports a list of published LRGs from the Libguides Admin site and then allocates guides to individual Library Officers.

RSGs

Faculty teams will request link check of RSGs on a case by case basis.

Allocation will be arranged in coordination with Frontline Team Leaders.

General purpose

If time and workloads permit, we aim to check all published general purpose guides once per year.

The LibGuides team will export a list of published  guides and allocate guides to individual Library Officers.

Guides for researchers

If time and workloads permit, we aim to check all published Guides for researchers once per year.

The LibGuides team will export a list of published  guides and allocate guides to individual Library Officers.

NOTE: as indicated in the table above, we rely on exporting lists to allocate guides for checking. This is another reason why it's important to check your guides are set to the appropriate type and status.

When completing link-checking Library Officers work from a checklist. And the process involves more than just looking at links!

As part of link-checking Library Officers will check guides, and either update or notify the owner about:

  • Links - both link assets and hyperlinked text
  • Books from the catalogue
  • Spelling and grammar
  • Friendly URLs
  • Videos
  • Images.
