Libguide Libguide: Before you start

Before you start: 1. Reusing content

Just about everything in LibGuides - pages, boxes, content of all kinds, database listings, even Library Guides themselves - are designed to be reused. So always think about reusing existing content rather than creating new content.

There are 2 types of reuse:

  • Copying creates a duplicate of that guide/page/box/asset which is independent from the original. You can make any edits or modifications to the copied item and it will not affect the original.

  • Mapping/Linking adds the content to your guide and the content is linked to (mapped to) the original. You cannot edit mapped content (unless you go and edit the original). In turn, changes made to the original asset will flow through to all places where the item is mapped.

See Reusing content for more information and instructions on how and when to copy or map content.

Before you start: 2. If you copy and paste text

It's always tempting, when developing these sorts of resources, to prepare your text in a Word document, and then copy into your LibGuide.

If you wish to paste content from Word, or from other webpages, you should paste as plain text. This will strip out all of the copied formatting, leaving only the text. There are instructions on how to do this in the SpringShare Help page on Rich Text/HTML Content

Alternatively, you can use the Remove Format icon in the text editor. This is designed to return text to its original formatting, but can also be used to strip formatting from copied content. See SpringShare Help on Remove text formatting.
