Libguide Libguide: Building pages & boxes

Building pages

To add a page, click on the + tab at the end of the line of tabs (top nav layout) or at the bottom of the left hand navigation menu (side nav layout).

When adding a page to your LibGuide, you can create a new page, or reuse an existing page. If you reuse an existing page, you have the option to create an independent copy rather than having it mapped back to the original. Unsure if you should copy or map? Check the Reusing content page, especially the Understanding copying vs mapping box.

Everything in the page URL box relates to that individual page:

  • You can edit the page URL. Click on the blue crayon icon to give the page a friendly URL. For more on this, see the page on Friendly URLs.

  • The PAGE drop-down allows you to work on the page itself, for example changing its name, reordering/moving boxes and content items, or deleting the page. Note: the Reorder/Move Pages option allows you to move pages around within your LibGuide. You can do this by clicking and dragging!

  • The [Page] LAYOUT drop-down allows you to select a layout. This option appears only in top-nav guides. You can have from 1 - 4 columns, and can choose a pre-set width of the columns, or customise the width of the columns. All the widths are selected as a percentage of the width of the page. (Side-nav guides will have only two columns, one of which is used to display the navigation menu. You cannot adjust the column width in side navigation.)

For more information, see the LibGuides Help on Add, reuse, or edit pages in a guide.

Adding Boxes

Introduction

In the top-nav (top tabs) layout, you can:

  • add a top box and a bottom box. The top and bottom boxes span all columns, no matter how many columns you have.
  • add boxes to the columns.

In the side-nav (side tabs) layout:

  • there is no top and bottom box option
  • you can have only one main column of boxes
  • you can also add boxes to a page so that they appear beneath the left (side-nav) panel.

When adding a box to your page, you can you can create a new box, or reuse an existing box. If you reuse an existing box, you have the option to create an independent copy rather than having it mapped back to the original. Unsure if you should copy or map? Check the Reusing content page, especially the Understanding copying vs mapping box.

For more information, see the LibGuides Help on Adding boxes to your pages.

Box type summary:

Standard box

This will be your most-used box.

You can add pretty much any type of content you want in this box:

  • Static content such as text, images, databases, books from Primo Search, links, documents/files;
  • Interactive/dynamic tools such as media/widgets, RSS feeds, Google search boxes;
  • Widgets from Springshare products such as a LibSurvey widget.

For more information, see the LibGuides Help on Add, reuse, or edit boxes on a page.

Gallery box

You can display a rotating series of images.

See How to use gallery boxes.

Tabbed box

You can use this to add multiple tabs of content in a single box.

See How to use tabbed boxes.

Profile box

This lets you add any user profile in our system, for example, a Library staff member, to any page.

This box is automatically populated with information from your libguides account including your contact details and a photo if you have added one.

See How to use profile boxes.

Top and bottom boxes

These boxes are standard boxes that span the full width of the guide. You can only have one top and one bottom box on a page.

Adding content

When you add content to boxes, you have the option of reusing existing content or adding new content

Content that can be reused includes assets - eg links, books, widgets, databases (a special type of asset), and images. For more on this, see the next section on Reusing content.

Everything that can be reused can also be created, except databases. (Databases are a special case because they are also included in our A-Z Database and other lists.) For more on creating new content, see the section on Building content & assets.
