Libguide Libguide: Building content and assets

Adding content

Remember that, when adding content to your boxes, you can often reuse existing content.

There are 10 standard Content Types that you can add to a box. You add content by clicking on the Add/Reorder button at the bottom left corner of the box.

You can add various types of content all in one box. You can reorder content within the box as well!

The content type that you are likely to use the most is Rich Text/HTML. You can use this to add all sorts of content, including text, images, tables. (Note: You shouldn't need to change the font or size of the text in your LibGuides. To add structure/interest/variety, use headings, bold, italics, bullet-points and tables. And for a note on copying and pasting text, see If you copy and paste from Word.)

Most of the Content Types are also Assets and can be reused. The 10 standard Content Types are:

Content Type Used ... Included in Assets Repository?
Rich Text/HTML  for WYSIWYG-based content of all types  No
Database  for links to our databases  Yes, but in its own Databases Repository
Link  for any web link  Yes
Media/Widget  embedded video, search box, or iFrame  Yes
Book from the   catalogue  for links to books or ebooks in our collections  Yes
Document/File  to give users quick access to document - not commonly used, try to use web links where possible  Yes
RSS Feed  to embed an RSS feed in your LibGuide - we tend not to use this  Yes
Guide List  for a list of LibGuides  No
Poll  for feedback from users  Yes
Google Search  for a Google search box (web, Books, Scholar, or Patents)  No

Because we subscribe to LibWizard, you also have the option to add a LibWizard Item to your box. This is a customised survey or feedback form.

For more information, and for information on reordering content within a box, see the LibGuides Help on Adding content items (assets) to your boxes.

Creating assets

We have already seen that we can reuse assets (that's the idea). But assets need to be created in the first place. You do this at the point where you want to insert the new asset.

To create a new asset:

  1. Check that it doesn't already exist. You can do this in the Asset repository at Content > Assets. You can filter the assets by Name/Title, Type, and/or Owner.
  2. Click on Add/Reorder
  3. Select the type of asset you wish to create
  4. Select the Create New ... [Link, Widget, Book etc] tab
  5. Follow the prompts to set up the asset
  6. Click on Save.
