Requesting an embargo

Where a thesis contains matters affecting national or industrial security, commercial-in-confidence content, culturally sensitive content, content which would breach privacy laws, or any other content which would pose a risk to the author, University, or any other third-party, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) may approve restriction of the circulation, copying and electronic access of the thesis.

This may be the case when a ‘Thesis by Publication’ includes published articles, however the journal publisher has not approved open access of the article/s within the Charles Sturt University Research Output (CRO) Repository.

To request a partial restriction please complete the ‘Thesis Embargo/Restricted Version Request’ form on our forms and guides page You will need to await approval of your request before uploading your thesis. Once you have received approval you may commence the relevant steps below.

Uploading your embargoed thesis

Fully restricted thesis

If your thesis has been approved for an embargo, instead of selecting Open in the step above, select Embargoed. Then enter today’s date into the start field, and the embargo end date. If the thesis will be permanently restricted, enter 31/12/2099 as the end date. Click Create:

Partially restricted thesis

When partial restriction is approved, you will be required to upload two versions of your thesis to CRO.

The first copy of the thesis will have the restricted portion/s redacted or removed and will be accessible publicly. A link or DOI may be inserted on the relevant page of the thesis for direct access to the publication. Upload the file and select Public access to file: Open and Licence: Other.
The second copy uploaded must be the complete final version of the thesis, however this will not be publicly accessible until the embargo expires, if at all. Upload the file and select Public access to file: Embargoed and enter today’s date and the end date, or if permanently restricted, 31/12/2099.
