Using Leganto: For Staff: Use Cite It!

About the Cite It! tool

The Cite It! tool is a bookmarklet that can be added to your browser bookmark bar so that you can add resources to your lists on the go. Cite It! streamlines the process of adding web pages and streamed videos (i.e. YouTube video) to a list by gathering data from the page and pre-filling some of the citation fields for you.

If the item is held by the Library (i.e. through Primo Search or a library database), use the instructions on the Use Primo Search page to add the resource to the list.

Add the Cite It! tool to your browser

1. Select your initials in the top, right corner of the Leganto platform.

Select Leganto Cite It!

2. Select the Cite It! icon.

Drag and drop the icon on your Bookmarks toolbar.

Using the Cite It! tool

1. Open the webpage you wish to add to the reading list.
Make sure you are logged into Leganto.

2. Select Cite It!
Leganto will generate a new record in a popup window and will generally auto-populate the title and URL of the page.

3. Edit the record.
Use the Type drop-down scope to select the resource types (generally Website or Video). It will often default to Other.

Add other details as required i.e. author, publication date etc.

4. Select the reading list and section.
Select Add & Close.

The item will be added to your nominated list.

Note: if you find the CiteIt! tool isn't working as expected, try deleting it from the bookmark bar and add it again.

Cite It! Not working

The Cite It! tool will retrieve available data from websites (not PDFs) and use that information to add resources to a list.

When Cite It! won't retrieve website data as expected, there are a few possible solutions.

  1. Open another tab in your browser and log into Leganto. You will need to be logged into Leganto for the Cite It! tool to work consistently.
  2. Make sure that you have enabled Leganto pop-ups and cookies in your browser.
  3. Delete the Cite It! icon from your browser bookmarks and reinstall it. See, Use Cite It!.

If Cite It! still won’t successfully retrieve website data, add the resources manually. See, Use manual entry.

Request new resources

Use the Cite It! tool with websites such as Amazon and Google Books to request readings from new resources which may be added to the Library collection.

  1. Follow the steps in the Using the Cite It! Tool box above to add the resource to the reading list.
  2. Select the ellipsis ( ... ) to the right of the record and select Send to Library
  3. When you send your reading list to the Library (see, Publishing Your List), Library staff will process your request.

Once the readings are processed, the Library will update the citation to include a link to access the reading online. If you'd rather the item didn't appear in the list until online access is available, use the Suggest New Material form to place the request instead.
