OER Project Management: Drafting and publishing platforms

Guidance for creating or adapting OER at Charles Sturt, centred on Pressbooks but applicable to other formats.

Drafting tools

The chances are that your team will need to work remotely on your OER. This is one of the main reasons we encourage you to use drafting tools that are able to be worked on collaboratively and in real time. You're most likely familiar with commonly used options, but there are many others that could be used - let us know if you find something that works for you!

Two common options include:

Microsoft Office / 365

  • Accessed via institutional subscription.
  • Ideal for drafting, collaborating, and sharing work in progress.
  • Features include real-time collaboration and commenting.
  • Ideal if you're writing with others from the university. 

Google Docs 

  • Ideal for drafting, collaborating, and sharing work in progress.
  • Features include real-time collaboration and commenting.
  • Ideal if you're writing with others outside of the university. 

Using Pressbooks and H5P

Charles Sturt has an institutional subscription to Pressbooks and provides technical support for its use. 

Pressbooks

  • Ideal for digital textbooks, e-books, multi chapter resources.
  • Features include professional formatting, accessible design and multimedia integration (images, videos, H5P interactive elements.

H5P

H5P is an open-source platform that allows users to create, share, and reuse interactive HTML5 content like quizzes, presentations, and games.

  • Ideal for interactive learning content including quizzes and flashcards
  • Features embedding options for integration into other platforms (e.g., Pressbooks)
