Overview

Charles Sturt Library offers extensive research services to staff and students involved in research or enhancing their research skills. Librarians provide subject expertise on publishing, data management, research outputs, open access, preservation and persistent identifiers.

Advanced information retrieval and management

Librarians assist with:

  • Constructing complex search strategies.
  • Advanced information retrieval techniques.
  • Setting up and managing current awareness alerts.
  • Using bibliographic management software.

Copyright and licensing in research

  • Directing users to relevant copyright guides for initial assistance.
  • Explaining subscription eBook access, including usage allowances and limitations.
  • Explaining copyright and Creative Commons licences, including attribution requirements.
  • Clarifying the permitted use of public domain, free-to-read and openly licensed materials. Complex enquiries are referred to the Copyright & Open Content Librarian.
  • Delivering presentations and creating training resources on copyright.
  • Advising on obtaining permissions for third-party copyright use.
  • Supporting Creative Commons licensing for open educational resources and use of openly licensed materials in publishing and research.
  • Referring complex legal matters to Legal Services.
  • Referring referencing and citation format enquiries to the Academic Skills Team.

Charles Sturt Research Outputs (CRO)

  • Advising on using the CRO system and directing users to self-help resources for CRO/Pure submissions.
  • Providing regular CRO training through Library and Research Services programs.
  • Offering personalised consultations, training, and support as needed.
  • Supporting ERA & ROC reporting requirements.
  • Reviewing research inputs for metadata accuracy and enhancement.
  • Verifying open access status of outputs.
  • Assisting in sourcing copies of research outputs.

Researcher profiles

  • Guiding users to Library guides and self-help resources.
  • Assisting with searching CRO for profiles and outputs.
  • Helping set up Scopus AuthorID, Web of Science ResearcherID or ORCiD profiles.
  • Advising on adding outputs and activities to Pure.
  • Troubleshooting and assisting with linking researcher IDs.
  • Addressing complex CRO-related issues.

Research data management

  • Directing users to self-help resources and Library guides.
  • Highlighting available resources for convenience.
  • Troubleshooting issues and providing tailored training.
  • Offering specialist advice on CRO compliance, FAIR data principles, data management planning and storage solutions.
  • Providing best-practice guidelines for data management and discovery, including open access data.
  • Advising on data storage solutions.

Scholarly publishing

  • Directing users to Library guides and self-help resources.
  • Demonstrating how to find journal information using SCImago and understanding open access publishing.
  • Conducting SCImago searches to identify suitable journals and resolving citation issues.
  • Advising on avoiding predatory publishers and navigating the open access model.
  • Assisting in assessing research impact and providing publishing advice.
  • Developing individual publishing strategies with researchers.
  • Consulting with Faculty and School leadership on broader publishing strategies.

Research impact

  • Providing training seminars on research assessment and metrics, tailored for HDR students and Early Career Researchers.
  • Creating Research Metrics Reports (RMR) for academic promotions or grant applications.
  • Advising research teams preparing ARC, NHMRC or DECRA grant applications.
  • Promoting responsible use of metrics in accordance with DORA principles.
  • Managing the Research Metrics Report Service Charter.

Systematic or systematic-like reviews

  • Providing library guides and training, with referral to further support if needed.
  • Offering dedicated training sessions and comprehensive guides.
  • Collaborating on search strategy development, conducting searches and reference management.
  • Assisting in writing methodology sections of papers with co-authorship recognition.
  • Managing the Systematic and Systematic-like Reviews Service Charter.

Theses and dissertations

  • Directing users to a specialised resource page for theses and dissertations.
  • Demonstrating search methods for theses across various databases, including CRO.
  • Providing troubleshooting support for HDR students facing access or usage issues.
  • Offering guidance on copyright and thesis publication.
