EndNote and NVivo for Literature Review: Import your EndNote Library

Imported EndNote References in NVivo

When you import EndNote references into NVivo this will happen in NVivo:

  • References with attachments will be stored in your Files
  • References without attachments will be stored in your Externals
  • Referencing information will be stored in File Classification
  • Keywords, abstracts and notes will be stored in Memos

Instruction for Export from EndNote

  • Select the EndNote References you would like to export
  • Click on File – then Export

  • Export the references as an XML file and save them where you can easily find them again. Make sure that Export Selected References is ticked.

Import web pages through Ncapture

NCapture gives you the ability to import web pages.

  • Click on Data and then From Other Sources.

Instructions for importing the References into NVivo

Before you import, decide if you want to start a new project or use an existing one. We recommend that you have separate projects for your literature analysis and your own research data.

  • Import the saved XML file. You need to click on Import and then EndNote

  • Find and select your XML file and then click open.


  • Now you need to decide:
    • How you want to name your sources. You can either save them by Title or by Author and Year.
    • Choose if you want all your references in one classification table or separate tables for each type of reference; e.g. books, thesis, journals ... We recommend you use a single classification.

Save the XML file either under Title or Author Year

  • You also need to select which NVivo folders your references should be imported to.
  • Select Import source content from file attachments, URLs or figures.
  • Select Create memos from abstracts, keywords and notes.
