Charles Sturt University Copyright Guidelines

Thesis for examination

A thesis for examination is the version submitted to your examination panel for assessment. The Fair Dealing exception of the Copyright Act allows you to make a single copy of a reasonable portion to include in an assessment.

Copyright material can be included in your thesis for examination but not in your published thesis, unless you have permission from the copyright holder. If you cannot get permission from the copyright owner you will need to replace any copyright material in your published thesis with reference statements pointing to where it can be located.

It is best to ask permission early. Tips for getting permission include:

  • Identify the correct owner
  • Identify yourself, institution, contact details and purpose for use
  • Clearly identify what is being copied and how it is being used
  • Obtain permission in writing (email is okay) and keep copies

Thesis by publication

A thesis by publication is one where the core chapters of your thesis consist of papers you have published. These often include articles in peer review journals or book chapters. The papers are linked together by an introductory chapter and concluding chapters. Published articles can be included in your thesis for examination under the Fair Dealing exception.

To include the published version of an article or book chapter in your published thesis, the articles generally need to be in a 'gold' open access journal. You can find more information about OA publishing in the Open Access publishing guide.
If the article is not 'gold' open access, you will need to get permission to include the published version from the publisher. Otherwise you will only be able to include the pre-print or post-print version in your thesis. This will depend on the terms of your publishing agreement.

If you are currently publishing with a view to writing a thesis, it is best to negotiate using the published version in your thesis when submitting articles for publication.

CRO

CRO (CSU Research Output) contributes to the growing international trend for Open Access to scholarly outputs and makes research literature freely available online. Charles Sturt University researchers are required to deposit their research into CRO.

Any publishing agreements will determine which version of your thesis can be deposited into CRO.

It is important to understand your publishing agreement before signing and to get assistance and advice if you're unsure of the terms and conditions, including your copyright obligations.
