Open Access resources can be accessed by anyone. Content can also be reused subject to license conditions. They are generally available on the internet and users can download or print them.
Some Open Access resources are made available under a Creative Commons or similar licence that requires Attribution (acknowledgement of creator), Non-Commercial, No-Derivatives or Share-Alike, or a combination of these conditions. Users are able to share, copy and redistribute Open Access resources in any medium or format.
It is important that users recognise the distinction between Open Access resources and material that has been illegally published via the Internet without permission from the creator or copyright holder.
By assigning a Creative Commons (CC) Licence, authors and creators can make their works available in a way that permits them to be used in various ways without giving up all of their copyrights. CC licensed material can be used for teaching, research and study provided the conditions are complied with. CC is a form of open access licensing.
