Convert to Plain Text will strip hidden field codes from the document, leaving plain text that is no longer linked to records in your EndNote library. You should therefore first manually save a copy of the original EndNote formatted document, and then convert to plain text.
To remove field codes and save the formatted citations and bibliography as text:
Windows
- From the EndNote tab in Microsoft™ Word
- Select Convert Citations and Bibliography in the Bibliography section of the toolbar
- Select Convert to Plain text
- A copy of the document, without field codes, appears in a new document window.
- Save this document with a new name, e.g. chapter 1_plain text, and select OK.
Mac
- From the EndNote tab in Microsoft™ Word
- Select Tools menu and then Convert to Plain Text
- A copy of the document, without field codes, appears in a new document window.
- Select the Office icon and then Save
- From Microsoft™ Word’s Save As dialog, type a new name for this copy of your document, e.g. chapter 1_plain text, and select OK.
The resulting plain text of your document will retain the original in-text citations and references and can the submitted to a publisher, or shared with a colleague or supervisor with no risk of them corrupting your EndNote formatted version.
