EndNote: EndNote & Microsoft™ Word

Endnote & Microsoft Word

When EndNote is installed on a computer with Microsoft Word already installed, an EndNote toolbar is added to the Word 'ribbon'. The EndNote toolbar enables you to insert in-text citations for records in your EndNote library, edit & manage citations, e.g. add page numbers, and manage the format of the corresponding automatically generated reference list.

Important notes:

  1. The EndNote cite-while-you-write (CWYW) option should only be used with a local copy of a documents saved on your computer. Documents that you normally store in the 'cloud', e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive (Microsoft), iCloud, Google Drive etc., will need to be copied to your local computer for use with EndNote.
  1. CWYW may not work at all with documents stored in the cloud, or the document may become corrupt over time.

Mac users

On some machines with Mojave or Catalina, an error message may appear when using the "Insert Citation" option on the Word ribbon. Instructions are here on how to fix.

Word Online and Cite While You Write

EndNote 21 allows you to insert your EndNote references into Word Online.  EndNote 21 has a native integration with Word Online.  You will need an EndNote Web account activation.  If you do not have EndNote Online refer to the section EndNote Online.
