Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: SoTL

This guide is designed to support educators and researchers engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). It offers resources to help you explore SoTL research and connect with the wider academic community.

Introduction

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) defines ‘scholarship’ as activities aimed at deepening understanding or staying updated in a field of knowledge. While the terms scholarly activity and scholarship are often used interchangeably, they generally refer to actions that help academics grow their knowledge and keep current.

The Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoTL) is a more structured approach that involves research on teaching practices and sharing findings for peer review. SoTL typically includes:

  • designing and conducting teaching-related research,
  • sharing results through presentations, publications, or other means.

Regardless of where it fits, all scholarly activity involves:

  1. engaging with and critically reflecting on knowledge
  2. producing new knowledge or insights,
  3. sharing that knowledge with others
