Library Word Meanings

Common Library Words is an explanation of a number of words and phrases you might come across when using the Library or the Library's resources.

Created by the University of Newcastle Library, it also includes translations of these words into Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Arabic.

Find the Library's resources using Primo Search

Primo Search

Use Primo Search to find books and ebooks on your topic:

  • After you have run a search, use the Refine My Results panel to limit to books or eBooks

Finding a print book on the shelves

CALL NUMBERS identify and organise items by specific topics. CSU uses the DEWEY System for each item. Read the call numbers from left to right on each book shelf and always include all letters after the number!

HOW TO READ OUR CALL NUMBERS

791       First, read the numbers before the decimal point.

.4302    Then read the numbers after the decimal point.

HEAD    Lastly, read the letters.
