Requesting permission to reuse copyright material: Getting permission from publishers

Permission from publishers

Many publishers use the Copyright Clearance Centre (CCC) Rightslink for permission requests. The CCC provides licensing services for academic publishers and Rightslink is an automated system used to streamline permission and licensing processes. Rightslink is accessed via a link near the articles on publisher webpages.

If you are unable to find a link to the CCC Rightslink on the publisher's website:

  • Search directly in the CCC Marketplace
  • Look for other permission information on the publisher’s website.
  • Find the publisher's contact details and email a request.
  • The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) publishers website has a list of permission details for publishers that are signatories to the (STM) publishers' permissions guidelines.
  • Contact our copyright team for help.

Using CCC Rightslink to request content reuse

Follow these steps to submit your request:

  1. Locate the journal article
    • Find the article in Primo or your favourite search tool
    • Go to the publisher's website where the article is hosted
    • Make note of the part you want to copy (e.g. Figure #, caption, page number).
  2. Find the permissions link
    • Look for a link with the word “Permissions” or “Rights” or similar,  typically located near the article title, or drop down menu under tools.
    • Click the link to launch the CCC RightsLink system. The source details will be auto populated.
  3. Select the type of use
    • On the RightsLink page, choose the intended* use of the image.
*If your intended use is not listed in the options, you may need to contact the publisher directly.
  4. Enter details for the request
    • Select appropriate options from the drop down menus
    • Click Quick Price
The price may be $0.00 or there may be a fee, depending on the options you’ve chosen.
    • If you are happy with the Quick price quote, click continue.
  5. Create or log into your account if prompted to so
    • First time users will need to register for a RightsLink account. You will need access to your email during registration as it will send a security code.
    • If you already have an account, sign in to proceed.
  6. Add the details of your work
    • Title
    • Date of publication
    • Other specific details if required and continue.
  7. Additional information
    • Add details of the image or other content you wish to reuse
    • Add your name.
  8. Review your order
    • Make sure everything is correct
    • Check the terms and conditions of the licence are adequate for your intended use.

After acceptance

You may receive a licence immediately or it could take some time, depending on the publisher, content use requested and fees clearance if applicable.

  • You must keep a copy of the licence agreement
  • Ensure you comply with the granted licence, including appropriate attribution as required.
