Evidence-Based Dentistry

The American Dental Association definition of evidence based dentistry:EBD

"an approach to oral health care that requires the judicious integration of systematic assessments of clinically relevant scientific evidence, relating to the patient's oral and medical condition and history, with the dentist's clinical expertise and the patient's treatment needs and preferences."

Evidence-based dentistry (EBD) includes:

  • the dentist’s clinical expertise,
  • the patient’s needs and preferences,
  • and the most current, clinically relevant evidence.

These three elements are all essential when making decisions about patient care.

The Steps in EBP

There are various ways of listing the steps in the Evidence-Based Practice process, but a common way has 5 main steps:

1 Expressing the problem as a clinical question (Ask the question)
2 Finding evidence-based resources that answer the question (Acquire the evidence)
3 Critically appraising the evidence to assess its validity (Appraise the evidence)
4 Applying the evidence (Apply the evidence)
5 Re-evaluating the evidence and its application (Re-evaluate the evidence)
