Open access publishing

Open Access publishing & education resources (OER)

Publish in an OA journal

Models of Open Access

  • Gold OA model : Publishing in an open access journal where the article is generally made available under a creative commons licence. Authors may be required to pay an article processing charge (APC) to the publisher.
  • Green OA model: Publishing in a traditional subscription-based journal and depositing or self-arching an open access copy in an institutional repository. Accepted author manuscripts post-peer review, or post print versions of your article, can be made available in a repository subject to publisher policy and permission.
  • Hybrid model:  Paying an article processing charge (APC) to a publisher of a subscription-based journal, in order to make your article open access.

Charles Sturt Uuniversity researchers can make their work open access by one of two ways:

  • publishing in a journal that is free to readers, but may be subject to article processing charges (APC)
  • depositing an open access copy of their published work in a repository such as CSU Research Output (CRO) repository - Green OA

Paying article processing charges (APC)

Charles Sturt University does not have a fund set aside to pay for open access publication. Check your funder's policy before using research grant funds to pay for publication.

Predatory publishing

Authors should be aware of predatory or deceptive publishers if they publish in a Gold OA journal. Predatory or deceptive publishers may charge APCs without providing the required editorial and peer-review services associated with scholarly publication.

Contact a Faculty Librarian for help in selecting a suitable open access journal.
