Visual Communication Guide for Library Staff: Using images

Using Creative Commons Licenses

CC licences and Australian Copyright law require you to attribute the creator of any CC work you are using as well as supply any relevant copyright information.

When attributing a CC work you should:

  • Credit the creator;
  • Provide the title of the work;
  • Provide the URL where the work is hosted;
  • Indicate the type of licence it is available under and provide a link to the licence (so others can find out the licence terms); and
  • Keep intact any copyright notice associated with the work.

For instruction on how to create attributions check Creative Commons Australia.

Many CC image source sites have the option to grab a HTML attribution code to embed in your web content.

If you are using Flickr images you can also use ImageCodr to create a HTML embed code.

If you are unable to provide an attribution with your image use an image where attribution is not essential such as our Stock Images, CC0 images, Public Domain images, or photos taken by CSU Library staff.

Understanding CC0 and Public Domain

Creative Commons Zero (CC0) enables creators to waive copyright and related rights for their works to the fullest extent allowed by law.

Public Domain Mark (PDM) is used for works that are free of known copyright restrictions.

There is no legal requirement that you credit the author of the original work or the person who identified the work. However if you are requested to and the means to do so are provided include an attribution. Many image source sites have options to grab html attribution codes for PDM works.

Photos of Staff and Students

Before using an image where staff and/or students are identifiable you must have them sign a consent and release form. Forms are available for individuals and groups on the Division of Marketing website.

Scan and save the forms in the same S Drive folder with a clear and identifiable file name. S:\Academic\Library Services\PUBLIC RELATIONS\Images\Release Forms

Please note not all photos currently in the S Drive are available for public use. If you are unsure check with the staff member in the photo if they have given permission, or use an alternate image.
