HCS204 Research Skills Guide: Home

Introduction

Welcome to the HCS204 Research Skills Guide.

This guide was made for you by the Charles Sturt University Library and it is designed to make your research process easier.

This guide focuses on finding information about research methods. If you would like a refresher about other library skills, such as sources of information, using journal databases, evaluating information, and more, head over to the SOC101 Research Skills Guide.

Most important of all, use your librarians! If you need help with anything library-related, get in touch with the library. Library staff are here to help; you aren't expected to know everything about research and the Library can help point you in the right direction.

The Library recorded two library skills demonstrations to help you with Assessment Item 1. The skills covered here will also be very useful for Assessment Item 2

  1. Library Research Skills [Part 1] (23 mins)
How to use SAGE Research Methods Online and locating background information.
  2. Library Research Skills [Part 2]  (30 mins)
My colleague, Lauren, shows you how to apply time-saving search techniques to research in Primo Search, journal databases, Google Scholar and Google.

Evaluating information is also a critical skill at university, here is a recording that demonstrates how to evaluate two resources (14 mins) using the CRAP Test evaluation framework.

Wishing you the best for the study ahead!
