EEP417 Research Skills Guide: Assessments

In this guide

This guide is designed to give you important information literacy skills, which you will use not only for EEP417, but for all your future research tasks, and even into your future nursing careers.

You will not always need to perform each step in this guide as part of your assessment. Knowing which parts are relevant and which are not is an important skill in itself!

Assessment 2: Report

Assessment 2 requires you to write a report reflecting on UNCRC Article 31 and examining educational program and practice.

For this task, you can use the steps in this guide from the Identify & Find tabs, to help you locate suitable information resources. The examples on these pages do apply to Assessment item 4, however, the skills are applicable to any assessment item.

The information on the Evaluate and CRAP test pages will help you evaluate the sources of information you have found to ensure they are of a high quality.

Assessment 3: Reflective Essay on an Ethical Dilemma

For Assessment 3 asks each student must write an essay that builds on the research and thinking undertaken for the group dicussion.

Reflective Essay

The concept of the ‘best interests of the child’ (article 3.1 UNCRC) is not always easy to identify particularly in situations that present us with an ethical dilemma. Discuss your chosen dilemma in relation to the children’s rights (as defined by UNCRC) and the determination of children’s best interests. Provide a rationale for the resolution that your group reached and explain the ethical, rights-based, legal and professional considerations that led to the resolution.

In your essay you must:

  1. Commence your essay by identifying the dilemma you are addressing.
  2. Explain the characteristics of an ethical dilemma. What are the ethical dimensions of the situation you are discussing?
  3. Summarise the resolution the group reached.
  4. Explain the rationale for the resolution. What did you draw on to ensure that children’s ‘best interests’ were a primary consideration (for example, relevant insights from group discussion; the phases of the ethical response cycle; key documents - e.g., the UNCRC, ECA Code of Ethics, the NQS and EYLF- and readings from the modules?  Briefly reflect upon the process of working through the ethical dilemma. In this reflection consider what you have learnt in regard to areas such as your teaching practice; advocating and enacting children's rights; and reconceptualising the child as an informed participant in issues that affect them.
  5. Follow the conventions of writing an essay (i.e. introduction, body, conclusion).

For this task, you will find all of the sections helpful. I would recommend working through each of the pages in this guide beginning with the Identify tab.

Don't forget to refer to the Find and Evaluate tabs for advice on locating quality resources and evaluating information found online.
