NRS160 Research Skills Guide: Peer Review

Finding Articles in Peer-Reviewed Journals

Articles published in peer-reviewed (refereed) journals have been through a formal approval process, which checks that the article is accurate, well-researched, and contributes to the body of knowledge in the field.

The peer-reviewed status of an article should give some indication of its Reliability, Authoritativeness, and Purpose (three of the four elements of the CRAP Test). But you might also wish to check things like the affiliations of the authors, and the extent and quality of referencing. You will also have to check it for Currency.

You can often use refiners in Primo Search and databases to limit your search results to peer-reviewed articles.

Another way to check if a journal is peer-reviewed is to check its editorial information on its website.

But the best way to check or confirm that a journal is peer-reviewed is to use Ulrichsweb Global Periodicals Directory:

  1. Search for the journal title (not the article title) or the journal ISSN
  2. Locate the journal in the results list
  3. If there is a referee's shirt icon () in the column on the left it means the journal (and therefore the article) is refereed (peer reviewed):

Activity 6 - Peer Review: Ulrichsweb

Search for the following journal in Ulrichsweb. Is it peer reviewed?

  • Contemporary Nurse

Remember to search using the journal title, not the article title.
