HIP101 Research Skills Guide: Australian Institute of Health & Welfare

What is the AIHW?

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) is Australia's national agency for health and welfare statistics and information.

The AIHW releases about 150 publications every year, including two "flagship" publications, Australia's health, and Australia's welfare (published in alternate years), and numerous shorter reports, bulletins, and online information pages and data.

All the AIHW publications are available as free downloads from the website.

Using the AIHW website

1. Search the website

You can use the search box at the top right of screen to search for material on your topic.

The screen-shot below shows the results of a search for dementia. You can refine your results by Content Type.

2. Browse Reports & Data

If you hover your mouse over the Reports & Data tab, you get a range of resources, including:

  • reports & data by topic
  • featured publications
  • A-Z topics
  • latest releases
  • resources ("for students, teachers, and anybody after quick facts").

If you click on the Reports & Data tab, you can view:

  • reports & data by subject categories (each of the main categories has subcategories)
  • reports & data by an A-Z topic list
  • featured publications
  • latest releases.

TIP: If you know how to use Google Advanced Search, you can use it to search the AIHW website.

Other ways to find stats

You can search for books, reports, journal articles, and other material that have statistics on a topic, by going to Primo Search or a journal database.

In your search, use statistic* as a search term and combine it with your topic, as in these examples:

  • "mental health" AND statistic*
  • dementia AND australia* AND statistic*
  • obes* AND australia* AND statistic*

Remember that the double quotation marks searches for those words as a phrase; the asterisk searches for all words that start with that string of letters.

You might get more results if you use alternative terms for statistics, as in this search:
