Module 5: Finding the information you need

Searching with Google

It's common for people to start their searches for information with a search engine like Google. This can be useful to find basic information such as definitions but is rarely adequate to locate quality scholarly information.

There are a few strategies that you can use however, to make searching with Google more effective.

Watch the video below for some tips.

Using Google Scholar

Primo is a good way to find resources for your assessments but it isn’t the only way. Sometimes you might need to use a few different search tools to get the best results. It’s always tempting to use a search engine like Google, but the number of results can be very overwhelming, and not always good enough quality for a University assessment.

Google Scholar is a better alternative for academic searching than Google. You will find material that is more scholarly in nature, and it has the added bonus of being able to link your results to material held in Charles Sturt University Library. There are some steps to take to make sure this process occurs successfully. Watch this short video that will guide you through the process.
