SOC101 Library Research Skills Guide: Home

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the SOC101 Research Skills Guide.

This guide was made for you by a librarian from Charles Sturt Library. It is designed to make the research process for Assessment Item 3 easier.

We will cover the best way to:

  • Identify keywords and search strategies for your assessment
  • Find relevant resources using the Library and the Internet
  • Evaluate your results for suitability
  • Use the information in your assessment

You can use this guide any way you like; read it front to back or dip in and out as required. I recommend taking a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the content so you know what's in there in case you find yourself stuck later on.

Keep in mind that research is not a linear process and may not always follow a particular order of steps.

To help you locate information for Assessment 3, I have created a Library Research recording. We cover conducting a topic analysis, brainstorming keywords, using search techniques in Primo Search and the Library databases, as well as, evaluating information. Although this session is framed around Assessment 3, the skills will also be useful for Assessment 2.

Most important of all, use your librarians! If you need help with anything library or research related, get in touch with the library.

Wishing you the best for the study ahead.
